Sleep apnea breathing machines (CPAP) , models and masks

There are various sleep apnea breathing machines (CPAP) and face masks to suit your preferences.

CPAP machines blow air at a high enough pressure to keep your airway open while you sleep and your muscles are relaxed.

Modern machines offer therapy tracking software and independent power options. The complexity level of the machine’s air delivery process determines the machine model.

Masks. Your choices are quite wide, ranging from nasal pillows, vented and non-vented nasal masks and full-face masks, with or without humidifiers.

When I tried the full-face mask on in the office, a workmate commented I looked like Hannibal Lecter!

I now use a nasal mask (right) and I added an elastic chinstrap which makes it more difficult to take the mask off in my sleep if I got uncomfortable.

It has two small prong outlets that fit in the nostrils. These nozzles are mounted on a bridge under the nose with of course the straps to hold it in place, and to me it is the least intrusive.

Soft gel-type full-face masks are available which shape well to the contours of the face so the mask doesn’t leak.

An interesting mask for mouth-breathers is the oral one, which has only one strap around the back of the head.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved some brands of portable sleep apnea machines so that you are able to use a smaller machine when you travel, and battery packs are available.

This machine is not very cheap, but you may be able to rent a machine before you buy it or you may be able to rent-to-own a machine.

Take ownership of your condition and read up about your model of machine.

The settings are not that difficult and you can find your most suitable fit and feed yourself with a little research into the documents and manuals they provide. If you feel this is too difficult consultants will usually advise you.

New sleep apnea breathing machine models are coming out regularly.
